MAPO Documents

Please find a list of documents written by the MAPO consortium you could use for the preparation of your future FP7 projects :
  • The MAPO booklet : a short guidance for SMEs that want to participate in FP7
This booklet is the result of the work performed during the 2 first years of the MAPO project. It aims at giving SMEs skilled in marine topics a concrete methodology to take part in FP7 projects. Numerous references to European documents, guidelines, websites ... are given so as to help you to tackle the FP7 without difficulties. You can request a paper version of this booklet close to your MAPO contact.
  • Introduction of MAPO
  • List of FP6 SSA supported by the European Commission

In this document, you will find all Specific Support Action - SSA - (like MAPO) funded by the European Commission and which could also help you for a participation in the FP7.

  • List of best practices for SMEs on how to participate in European Research projects
We invite you to consult this document so as to define your strategy of participation in FP7. The document is based on interviews of coordinators and SME that participated in FP projects targeting marine topics. 36 coordinators and 44 SMEs have been interviewed during the MAPO project. From these interviews, the MAPO consortium developed best practices for SMEs on how to participate in European research projects. The document addresses SMEs working on the topic of marine pollution wanting to take part in European FP projects. It also contains a list of web blinks, interesting contacts and references to official documents, to provide you with useful information when you plan to participate in a EU research project.
  • Comprehensive list of the most interesting FP projects in the field of marine pollution (launched before 2006)

This list could be useful to experts to have a quick outlook on which are topics that have been already addressed at the European level and which are the ones needing more efforts.
For R&D coordinators willing to present new project in the Framework Program 7 (FP7), the tool can be used :
- To understand if a topic has been already covered by prior EU R&D projects, so to avoid overlapping of topics and incurring in negative evaluation
- To find out potential partners, whenever one of the topics indicated is relevant for the research interest of academician of companies deciding to initiate a project presentation process.

This list can be completed by the one provided by the EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) : http://www.emsa.europa.eu/Docs/opr/eu_marine_rtd_projects_overview.pdf.

In addition, the web site Eurocean publishs an info-base of the European Marine Research Funded Projects (EurOcean-MaP) which gathers information on projects funded by COST, EUREKA, EUROCORES (ESF), 6th Framework Programme, INTERREG III, LIFE and SMAP, summing up a total of 516 projects available for consultation, free of charge. The info-base covers research projects partly or entirely related to marine science and technology : http://euroceanmrfp.addition.pt/

  • Statistics about FP projects in the field of marine pollution

An accurate State-of-the-Art about European projects that have already been developed in the frame of current and previous Framework Programmes in the field of fight against marine pollutions has been performed. Please find therefore a document which could help you to position your futur projects in the FP.

In addition, the web site Eurocean publishs a statistical overview of Marine Science and Technology Projects Funded under the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission based on the study 245 marine related projects. Please find here the list of this 245 marine related projects.

  • Worldwide state of the art in the field of marine pollution
The aim of this report is to realise an accurate worldwilde state-of-the-art in the field of the fight against marine pollution. This state-of-the-art (SoA) is technologically oriented but also market oriented. It notably emphasizes technological and commercial successes, their impact also analyses what is lacking.
In addition, this document could be useful for the definition of your own FP project and for the writing of the associated proposal.
  • List of regulations that impact on marine pollution and ship operations

European and international regulations provide a framework for the economy. New legislation e.g. for ballast water or ship coatings will have an impact on business activities of related businesses who will have to adapt their products. The list of regulations as presented in this document gives an overview of the more relevant legislation related to marine pollution and ship operations. More than that it includes a section on potential research opportunities for SMEs evolving from that legislation. The following topics are covered : Antifouling, Ballast Water, Air Emissions from Ships, Waste - Sewage, Oil Response and Preparedness, Hazardous and Noxious Substances and Ship Safety. This document could thus also help you to identify new ideas for future projects.

  • A European cartography of SMEs – Skills, business area and RTD experience of European SMEs in the MAPO network
The overall aim of the MAPO project is to foster the integration of SMEs into European
research projects that concentrate on the combat against marine pollution. The somewhat low participation rate of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the
previous 6th European Framework Programme (FP6) was generally due to several factors such as: lack of resources, complexity of the programme, duration of the selection procedure, only 50% funding rate, necessity to share results. Another important reason is the misperception that FP projects can not be tackled by an SME and are more or less ‘reserved’ to big companies and public laboratories. This perception can only be reversed if more information on successfully participating SMEs becomes available. This is one goal of this report.
The other goal is to present information on all SME-members of the MAPO network that have skills in the combat against marine pollution and that show an interest in the participation in FP projects. This will give an overview of the skills and experiences available. It will also provide a survey on relevant business data to detect key competencies or data that characterises SMEs successfully participating in European R&D projects.
This report of business intelligence can be completed by the MAPO booklet and the list of MAPO best practices. These two documents offer a methodology and a list of actions to take part in FP projects in the field of marine pollution.
